Thermotropic Nematic and Smectic Order in Silica Glass Nanochannels
Optical birefringence measurements on a rod-like liquid crystal (8OCB),
imbibed in silica channels (7 nm diameter), are presented and compared to the
thermotropic bulk behavior. The orientational and positional order of the
confined liquid evolves continuously at the paranematic-to-nematic and sizeably
broadened at the nematic-to-smectic order transition, resp., in contrast to the
discontinuous and well-defined second-order character of the bulk transitions.
A Landau-de-Gennes analysis reveals identical strengths of the nematic and
smectic ordering fields (imposed by the walls) and indicates that the smectic
order is more affected by quenched disorder (originating in channel tortuosity
and roughness) than the nematic transition.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure
Foldable beam
A foldable beam possessing superior qualities of light weight, compactness for transportation, quick deployment with minimum use of force, and high strength is described. These qualities are achieved through the use of a series of longitudinally rigid segments, hinged along one side and threaded by one or two cables along the opposite side. Tightening the cables holds the beam extended. Loosening the cables permits the segments to fold away from the threaded side. In one embodiment the segments are connected by canted hinges with the result that the beam may be folded in a helix-like configuration around a cylinder. In another embodiment the segments themselves may be hinged to fold flat laterally as the beam is folded, resulting in a configuration that may be helixed around a shorter cylinder

TRAINING TEACHERS TO IMPLEMENT SYSTEMATIC STRATEGIES IN PRESCHOOL CLASSROOMS WITH FIDELITY
This study examined the fidelity of implementation by four Head Start teachers using the teaching strategies of constant time delay, enhanced milieu teaching, and system of least prompts with children with and without disabilities in an inclusive early childhood setting. The teachers worked with the researcher to determine appropriate skills to target for each teaching strategy. A multiple probe across behaviors design replicated across four teachers was used to determine the effects of teachers’ fidelity of implementation of evidence-based teaching strategies. The results showed that Head Start teachers could implement systematic teaching strategies with fidelity. The study also examined if children with and without disabilities can make progress towards their target skills. The results showed that children were able to make progress towards their target skills
